Miscarriage finale – Birth

HJD writes

Photo of Woman Swimming Underwater

Yesterday I saw my reflection smile
as I cut the cord between what’s me
and what she sees
as you shrunk to fit my palm
petals closing before my pride
I felt myself becoming the gaze
piercing through your shell
outgrowing what you gave

You’ll always be
firstborn
of loneliness and distrust
but I can love you
better
from the other side
of a glass barrier
defecting arrows
caressing blows

as much as I’d like
to hold your hand forever
the winds have blown through
our sails
the seas parted by my hand
it is time you learned to walk
